A Weekend in Charleston

On a whim, we decided to take off for Charleston for the holiday weekend. The weather was sunny but cool and breezy, and we had a wonderful time. First, we had lunch at my favorite Charleston eatery, 39 Rue de Jean, and then we went to the Charleston Aquarium. The Aquarium is awesome, and it has some beautiful outdoor exhibits. Here we are on the steps outside the Aquarium, looking out over the river and the Ravenel Bridge.

Walking, walking, walking and ...
hugging, hugging, hugging.
Garett checks out a turtle at one of the outdoor exhibits.

Maybe Garett will be a shrimp-boat captain when he grows up.
Safety first!
Our friends Trey and Ellen recommended a great place for dinner - The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene - in Mount Pleasant on Shem Creek. We had a blast watching the boats come in as we waited (and waited, and waited) for a table. The food was definitely worth the wait and we'll go back every time we visit Charleston!
"Arrgg, me maiteys!" Garett picked out a pirate sword from the Aquarium gift shop and had fun scaring all the people waiting for their table at The Wreck.
We lucked out and got a steal on a room at the Francis Marion Hotel. When we arrived, they upgraded us to a penthouse suite! What luck! Garett celebrated by treating our fellow guests with a little alligator clacking. We slept in on Monday and loafed in our pjs, before heading out to The Battery for a picnic lunch from Caviar & Bananas, a great deli and specialty food market on George Street.
Garett was intrigued by the old canons and stacks of canon balls. Such a boy!
What's a walk in the park without a dog? Garett gives a smooch to a very friendly Great Dane. His owner is the president of the Charleston Great Dane Rescue, and she assured me he was completely docile before I let Garett approach him. Garett was so excited! He laughed, clapped his hands and woofed like a dog! I love Great Danes and would love to have a rescue someday - when Garett is responsible enough to help with a dog and when he have a house roomy enough for more than just our 18lb cat Mickey.
Garett is wearing a precious John-John, handmade by my Aunt Frances. The collar has little fish stitched on it, a nod to his Daddy's favorite hobby - bass fishing! Thank you Aunt Frances - Garett looks adorable in his outfit and it will be a great heirloom for his boys someday. The love of Mommy's life.
How my boy loves his Daddy!
